Last night was another presentation by the Wichita State University group, Christians for Origins and Religious Research. If you take out the word research it may be a lot more accurate. I arrived an hour late but when inquired I didn't miss anything intellectual. Speaking to a large crowd of six people the evening was another brilliant display of a logical fallacy. Young Earth Creationism, in fact all of creationism, can be summed up by one logical fallacy, the argument from ignorance. This was displayed in the videos I shamefully wasted an hour of my life on. The videos were accounts of animals and insects. The videos did have some interesting facts about those species, one being the turkey another about whales and the third being about dragonflies. The videos contained knowledge gained by actual scientists with backgrounds in related sciences like zoology and biology. Commentary was added by creationists with backgrounds like dentistry and engineering. The |

creationist position goes something like this in every instance, "You see how amazing this feature is? Evolutionists can't account for this therefore we can conclude, based on no evidence whatsoever, that our version of our Christian god is entirely responsible." In other words it's the argument from ignorance where their god is used to fill in every gap in knowledge. And this is what they want taught in our schools. Imagine the encouragement these creationists offer to explore unknown answers in science. Why bother even researching when every new instance of knowledge gained would counter their prearranged conclusions. The creation version of science is this, start with a conclusion and stick with that conclusion irregardless of any other evidence presented. |

Actually even evidence that is known is disregarded, as the presenter claims this is okay because the message is for a general audience. An example was presented about how enzymes and proteins could be developed in a labratory setting with a two day experiment involving electricity and non-organic compounds. The precursors for life can be demonstrated but it was ignored by the creationist's as irrelevant. The response was, "Go do it, go create life." The creationists, on the other hand, have never done any scientific experiments validating their position. Of course believing that the universe is 10,000 years old requires rejecting of a lot of information, including information from the Torah which mentions ten generations of Predeluvian kings which go back more than 10,000 years. Apparently creationists will even reject their own Bible when it doesn't conform with their preconceived notions. There weren't that many scientific claims made that evening, |

most of the time was spent discussing religious nonsense which is the basis of creationism. It's not the basis actually, it's the entirety. Some slides did flash upon the screen which highlighted the absurdity of creationism. One was the old 'moon dust' argument. The YEC claim that since there is so little dust on the moon that's evidence the earth is only 6000 years old. This is based upon evidence of dust collected in Hawaii. Problem is Hawaii is not the moon and the researcher admitted in his article that the study was flawed. When dust samples were collected outside our atmosphere the amount of dust falling onto the moon was very little. Of course the YEC don't bother reporting those facts because that would mean they were wrong. They pick and choose what facts they find acceptable and reject the rest, this is what they want to teach in our schools. Another slide mentioned the biblical tale of the Tower of Babel. As many of you may know the Tower was created so the people of Earth could ascend into the clouds and do battle with the gods. Back in those days it was believed the gods and angels lived in the clouds. The Hebrew religion evolved a bit by reducing the number of gods and with technology of flight the remaining god and angels moved to a different realm. The tale was edited to remove a lot of this information and the entire Book of Jubilee was taken out of Protestant Bibles (it still exists in other inerrant versions of the Bible that god wrote but fundies hate to believe that there are other versions). The account was reinforced by Josepheus. As some of you may recall fundies love to refer to Josepheus as a historical that validated the life of Jesus but they'll disregard ol' Joe when it concerns the Tower of Babel. |
