12, 2004 How to Prove Military Service |
Well it seems that our president is having more than just a little bit of trouble proving he completed his military obligation. So for the George Bush's and Karl Rove's of the world, I (Mr Zero) thought I would demonstrate the proper way to prove completion of military obligation. I will do this by proving my own completion of obligation. First of all, let me say that I did not have a distinguished career in the military. In fact, it was less than exciting. If I had it to do over again I would have never joined. However, when I enlisted, I swore to uphold the constitution and to follow lawful orders of my superiors and if need be, die for my country (I didn't say "so help me god"). The holy grail of proof of completion of obligation is the DD 214. Mine is on the right, click the image for a full size version. The DD 214 describes the type of discharge that the serviceperson is receiving, A statement of completion of obligation, instructions for inquiry, recommendation for reenlistment and entitlements. |
Please note that on my DD-214, I have been granted and honorable discharge. There is now talk that the president was not honorably discharged from the military but received a general discharge. When a serviceperson is given a general discharge, that discharge can be upgraded to an honorable discharge within 6 months providing no incident in that time period. However, if the president's discharge was upgraded, he would not be recommended for reenlistment. He would, however, receive a DD 256 N, which is a pretty little certificate that is meant to be framed and displayed. The DD 256 N doesn't mean squat. I currently have a job with the federal government. When I was applying no one ever asked to see my DD 256 N. All they wanted was the precious DD 214. |
The president of the United States should provide a certified copy of all DD 214's he has been issued. If he was generally discharged he would receive one. If that discharge was upgraded, he would have another that says he was honorably discharged but is not recommended for reenlistment. Where is the President's DD 214? This is the question that Scott McClellan needs to be answering. Illegible copies of pay records prove exactly nothing. Click here to read the transcript of Scott McClellan dodging questions about the president's service record. He is ask point blank, several times about gaps in the payroll record. He says "these records I'm holding here clearly document the President fulfilling his duties in the National Guard". Well, Scott, no they don't. Mr President, I want to see your DD 214. Until that time I will consider you a deserter. Book
